About the Ship
There are three 70,000 dwt crude oil tankers operated by Russian operator Sovcomflot. They are employed shuttling crude oil form the Varanday oil field to Murmansk in a ten day round trip, depending on the weather.
Vasily Dinkov, Kapitan Gotsky and Timofey Guzheni were built at Samsung in Korea and delivered in 2008 and 2009. They are designed to work through ice up to 2.5 m thick at a speed of 2 knots without icebreaker support.
The crude is loaded at an offshore spar near to the Varanday field, through a bow loading platform and should take about two days to complete.
These vessels are designed and built to endure the freezing conditions of the Barents Sea.
In the operation area the ice fields are constantly moving, level ice has normally been
broken in large and smaller floes, forming ridges and ridge fields during compression.
Maximum level ice thickness usually reachs up to 1.5 m, with an average ridge height up to 3.5 m, and a maximum of 6 m.
The 256 m long vessel is diesel electric powered, with a pair of 11,600 kW Wartsila 16v38 engines providing power to two azimuth thrusters for propulsion.
The vessels are dual classed to the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping and Houston based ABS.
